Day 2

Ola everyone!  Today stared off with the opportunity to sleep in!  It was much needed.  The hotel provides amazing made to order breakfasts.

This is one of our choices.  And it was as good as it looks!

Then we went to eat lunch (I promise there was time in between!)  It was another "real meal" that had an all you can eat buffet.  Fun fact: In Brazil they only take what they can eat from the buffet.  It is bad to leave any food on the plate when you are done.  They would be horrified visiting a Golden Corral in the states!

The food!

This is a really tasty, fruity soda.  It is guarana fruit flavored.

Then we walked around to check out the cool and hip neighborhood that is Vila Madelene, where we are staying.

The we visited the Beco do Batman.  This is a cool street that was a place you wouldn't want to go years ago.  The neighbors were tired of it, so they started to clean up the street and graffiti artists came in and decorated it.  The first few murals were of Batman, so they renamed the street Beco de Batman, Batman's Alley.  Now there are artists and craftsmen and craftswomen that are on the street.  During the weekends, this place is packed.  Here are some of the cool murals along the alley.

Another great group pic!

Then is was back to the hotel for our first rehearsal since May!  It was without the rhythm section instruments because we get those in a couple of days, and we were all over the courtyard of the hotel, but it was GREAT to be able to play together again.

Here's a little sample of the fun. (I hope the videos go through. it may take a while)

There is also a skateboard park right next to where we rehearsed and the saxes got a fun pic.

Then, after some down time, it was off to a restaurant for some food and some live music.  Brazilian Jazz and it was incredible!  Thank you Dr. K for setting this up!

Some upfront seating

and  some lounge seating...

Some examples of the music

It was a great night!

Some quotes of the day:
Johniel: "I didn't think that I was was going to come to Brazil and leave loving Brazilian scat singing, but that was awesome."

Pretty much everyone in the band: "Dr. K., what is this puffy thing with the cheese in it?"

We had a great discussion about the good things we saw and heard and did today in our recap of the day, and it was time for bed.  Tomorrow, we head over to the Ibirapuera Park and the Ibiraouera Afro-Brazilian Museum Museuafrobrasil, followed by another rehearsal day.  The clinics, concerts and the church service are getting closer!

And also tomorrow, we get to try Feijoada. It is so very good.

Thank you again for following us along this trip!

Thank you Baylor Missions.
