Day 3

Hello everyone!  Today was another sightseeing day before we start our real work on Friday.  We started out with breakfast at the hotel again, and then we began our trek to Ibirapuera Park and the Ibiraouera Afro-Brazilian Museum Museuafrobrasil.  This was quite a trek (almost 3 miles) all through the city.  We navigated stop sign crosswalks, and stop light crosswalks, and no crosswalks and hurry up crosswalks, circle crosswalks, and just 1 or 2 leisurely stroll crosswalks before we got to out destination, but we had a great guide....Dr.K.

Dr. K Leading the way.

Matthew Davis:  Fetiche must be Portuguese for, "I got your nose."

An amazing and very sad representation of the slave trade

Some horrifying reminders of the slave trade.

Some Afro-Brazilian head dresses

Then is was time to walk through more of the city to eat at a restaurant that serves probably the most famous dish in Brazil, Feijoada!

First some Yucca fries

Here's the whole gang

Then the meal!! Feijoada is a black bean stew with pork.  Then there is rice, greens, pork chops, a grain dish and some fried yucca that tastes like pork rinds.  (and some passion fruit juice)  It was amazing!

Then the desserts

Chocolate cake with cocnout and ice crean

Caramel in cones

Caramel in a white flour kind of hard pancake

Then we trekked back to the hotel

After some rest and some practicing, we headed to dinner.  We got to eat sandwiches listening to this really fun salsa band. After dinner, we joined in.  Clapping clave rhythms and dancing along.  We are VERY easy to spot Americans, especially with our newly purchased Hawaiian shirts, and the other folks in the restaurant were recording us and taking pictures of us as we "partied" with them.  They loved it!  The band in the middle of a tune said good bye and thank you as we left.  It was a lot of fun.

Tomorrow is an early day.  We are on the bus at 6:45 to head to the rain forest park and the beach at Santos, so it is time to get some sleep.  And, after about 24,000 steps today, they should definitely be asleep by now, and they will sleep well!

Thank you all for following us.

Thank you Baylor Missions!

Sic'em Jazz!
